Path of the Oracle

UX/UI design
Path of the Oracle is a role-playing game set in mythic ancient Greece. The objective is to deliver a party selection interface capable of handling multiple characters with varied status and availability, whilst making the rote process of building a party enjoyable.

Game Reference

The process started by surveying comparable game interfaces that feature party selection. This allows for an understanding of successful interaction patterns and potential visual styling.

Structural Wireframes

Initial exploration of layouts and information hierarchy resulted in a focus on a horizontal layout, which offers a better experience given the content and aspect ratio of the target devices.

Detailed Wireframes

With a horizontal layout locked in, more detailed wireframes  were made to articulate typography and image affordances.

Aesthetic Direction

Developing an original aesthetic for the design involved identifying visual elements resonant with modern perceptions of ancient Greece. This was accomplished by referencing Greek art, specifically small oil flasks called lekythoi rendered in the uncommon white-ground technique. The bands of patterning, watery paint, and weathering inspired the visual elements of the interface. Yet, what makes the visual style more than just a facsimile of ancient art is the intentionally restrained color palette (Greeks loved mixing bright and varied colors in their artwork) and use of anime-style illustrations. These two decidedly modern style elements freshen up familiar Greek motifs.
